George Ioannou

George Ioannou is firmly placed among the Top 10 Living Artists. Born in Croydon, South London in 1974, his early inspiration came from the comic book heroes of the 60's and 70's and, having gained his art A-Level his early ambition was to be a cartoonist.

Ioannou studied television and film, which brought him to the screen icons who have influenced his life, such as Al Pacino and Michael Caine. He then began to take on numerous acting roles, including 'Die Another Day, and on TV, 'The Bill'.
Ultimately, it was his buying a house that brought Ioannou back to creating art. Faced with bare walls, he visited art galleries, but couldn't find something that 'jumped out'. So he painted the first of what would become a series; it was a canvas of Al Pacino in 'Scarface', and as he says 'the house loved it...!'.
For this first series of icon images, Ioannou has painted images and stars taken from his personal favourite films. He works in acrylic on canvas, taking many hours to select and draw the initial image by hand, determining the balance of form and shading needed to capture the mood of the piece. He then chooses and mixes his colours to further enhance the vibrancy and emotion of the image, before finally applying paint to the canvas.
While George Ioannou's work may be compared to that of the great Andy Warhol, he introduces us to his own style with his unique palette.
